BANGKOK – A French National has been arrested in Bangkok with a fake passport just days after a Russian National was arrested for using a stolen Spanish passport to exit the country.

A team of Special Branch and Phra Khanong police apprehended the 35-year-old French national in front of Lumpini Ville Building 1 on Soi Sukhumvit 77 in Suan Luang district at 11pm on Friday.

A search found the man had used a fake passport and has been living in Thailand for five years, police said on Saturday.

The suspect told police that his real name was Andre Espiasse Cabau and that he was a French national, but his passport identified him as “Andre Donatho”, the Bangkok Post reported. He had been staying in Thailand for five years.

He was handed over to Thailand’s Immigration to face charges of illegal entry.

A criminal record check showed that the man had been imprisoned for 10 years in France. Police said they suspected he might have been involved in a bank robbery in his country.

Earlier, national police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaichida ordered officers to step up their crackdown on criminal gangs and those using fake passports to enter the country.
