BANGKOK – The former Nepali Crown Prince Paras Shah regained consciousness and is in a stable medical condition, after suffering a serious cardiac arrest, he was admitted to Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand on 19 February 2013. He is currently being treated at the hospital’s intensive care unit.

After Shah was hospitalized, rumors of his death started floating around on Facebook, the social networking site. But on 24 February Shah’s doctors announced that he was still alive and receiving life support on mechanical ventilation, and added that he had suffered internal bleeding in his abdomen. Although the doctors were able to stop the bleeding, the 42-year-old still has a dangerously low blood pressure and is “critical but stable”. His medical history reveals that in 2007 he was admitted to the Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu after a mild heart attack. At the time, his doctors had performed a 50-minute-long balloon angioplasty to clear a blocked artery.

Shah’s wife Himani departed for the Thai capital on 22 February. Her in-laws, Gyanendra and Komal Shah, joined her on 27 February along with their three grandchildren. Paras and Himani Shah’s youngest daughter Kritika had also undergone surgery for appendicitis before leaving for Bangkok.

Nepal’s controversial former crown prince Paras Shah moved to Singapore in 2008 after the end of the monarchy in Nepal. He was arrested in Phuket in November 2012 and was charged for possession of marijuana. He was later released on bail for THB 10,000. In December, Shah was again detained by the Thai police for smashing a hotel room in a downtown area. This was not the first time that he was charged with public delinquency. Shah was the first Nepali royal family member ever to be arrested, after allegedly firing several rounds at Rubel Chaudhary – a Bangladeshi national and son-in-law of Nepal’s then deputy prime minister Sujata Koirala. Shah is also believed to have killed the well-known musician Praveen Gurung by running Gurung over with his car.
