CHIANG RAI – The office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has allocated 18 million baht to assist the educational institutions that sustained damage in the quake in Chiang Rai Province, and will urgently request budget of 200 million baht from the military government for further crucial maintenance.

The Secretary General of OBEC reported that as a result of the quake that struck many areas of Chiang Rai and the aftershocks that caused further damage, the buildings in 188 schools were left unsafe to use, and an additional 156 buildings collapsed, including some that were under construction. Along with educational instruments that were badly damaged, the total cost is estimated at more than 267 million baht.

OBEC allocated a budget exceeding 18 million baht for urgent primary restoration this week.

Moreover, OBEC is evaluating plans to renovate and build earthquake resistant structures and will request sufficient budget from the military government expected to total over 267 million baht.
