Earthquake After Shocks Cause Collapse of Six Story Building in Chiang Rai
CHIANG RAI – At approximately 9:30 pm Chiang Rai police were summoned to an accident involving a construction worker at a hotel building on Phahonyothin Road in Chiang Rai. Construction worker, Pranom Khantanit , suffered minor injuries, and was taken to hospital.
The construction site superintendent Pisit Rheanthong, told reporters that the building was about 40% finished and is expected to be completed next year. It is going to be a hotel (currently unnamed) with six floors and 78 rooms. The construction workers were pouring concrete on the third floor when its supporting steel beams fell down causing the partially finished floor to collapse. Pisit also said that the project engineers and civil engineers have confirmed that the support beams were structurally able to support the floor’s weight. They think the earthquake and the aftershock may have moved the beams from their original locations.
Chiang Rai Police commander Pol.Maj.Gen. Wanchai Suwansirikhet inspected the construction site and interviewed the workers. He also coordinated with a local governing organisation who is overseeing the project to further investigate the incident. The work site if now close until further notice. – CityNews
