CHIANG RAI – Drug runners fled following a brief firefight with border security officials leaving behind 530,000 methamphetamine tablets at a checkpoint in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district on Saturday night.

Mae Sae district chief Somsak Khanannam said the drug runners travelling in a pickup truck refused to stop at a manned security checkpoint and instead opened firing at officials manning it.

When officials checked the sacks, they found a huge quantity of meth-amphetamine tablets.
