KOH SAMUI – Thailand’s Koh Samui, a most popular resort island in southern Surat Thani province, has seen a sharp increase of dengue fever cases since mid-June, a local hospital official said Friday.
Since mid-June, Samui hospital has treated four or five dengue patients every day, the official who asked to be anonymous was quoted by Bangkok Post as saying.
But the official failed to confirm earlier media reports that the island had registered 62 dengue fever cases since the beginning of the year, only 29 of which were recorded from January 1 to June 14.
The official attributed the sharp increase to weather conditions resulting from rains, which have created an environment suitable for mosquitoes to spread.
The disease has potential to spread quickly as workers from outside Surat Thani could carry the disease onto the island, the official said.
