CHIANG RAI – The Marine Office Chiang Rai Branch warns people in the Chiang Saen District to monitor the rising water level in the Mekong River due to the drainage of dams in China.

The Director of the Chiang Rai branch of the Marine Office said it has been raining heavily recently in China, which caused the water level in the Jinghong Dam to rise. Chinese officials have been draining water from the Jinghong Dam into the Mekong River since 5th September 2014.

The Chiang Saen District Chief said that as a result of the outflow from the Jinghong Dam, Thai officials expect a mass of water from the dam will flow down the Mekong River over coming days.

The higher water level in the Mekong River will possibly have an effect on boat traffic, and the residents of villages near the river including Mae Ngoen Sub-district and Ban Saeo Sub-District of Chiang Saen District, will be watching rising levels closely.

People who live in the areas at risk are advised to move possessions away from waterways; authorities are also ordered to closely monitor the river level in order to promptly provide help to residents if required.

Meanwhile, Chiang Rai, flash floods and overflows have inundated 25 villages in four districts, particularly tambon Wiang Kham of Mae Sai.
