Chiang Rai Security Officials Held for illegal Firearms Possession

CHIANG RAI – Two state security officials were among three men arrested for illegal firearms possession on Saturday in Muang district.

The arrests were made at a home in tambon Tha Sai’s Moo 1 after the suspects were seen carrying suspicious-looking packages to a car parked outside.

Police said they searched the car and discovered two heavy machine guns and two AK-47 assault rifles.

They also found 14 rounds of 11mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition and 330 rounds of belted 7.62mm ammunition for an M60.

The suspects were named as Thanasit Poonsiritanakarn, 36, Pol Sgt Maj Witsawa Tapankaew, 36, and paramilitary ranger Kittipong Intajai, 32. A 9mm handgun was also found in Pol Sgt Maj Witsawa’s possession, and another 9mm gun and a semi-automatic pistol were found inside the house, police said.

Mr Thanasit allegedly told investigators he was paid 30,000 baht to store the weapons. The two other suspects denied any knowledge of how the weapons were obtained or what they would be used for.
