Chiang Rai City Hall Steps Up Helmet Awareness and Enforcement for Motorcyclists

CHIANG RAI – The city of Chiang Rai has stepped up the enforcement of the helmet law among motorcyclists, new signs have been erected at the entrance of the Chiang Rai City Hall and other Municipal offices to encourage motorcyclists and their passengers to put on helmets when riding their bikes.

Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said today that the move was in reference to the Cabinet resolution in 2010 to declare a decade of road safety from 2011 and 2020 with the aim being to reduce road fatalities to lower than 10 per 100,000 by 2020.

Mr. Narongsak said that the campaign is in accordance with City Hall’s announcement of the Chiang Rai agenda to promote road safety throughout 2018.

He added that all civil servants and officials as well as everyone who works for any state agencies will be verbally reprimanded if they are found to have violated the road safety law, while the second offense will result in a written report to their supervisors. A third offense will also lead to another written report, which may affect their promotion or the renewal of their contracts.

As for members of the public who fail to abide by the law inside City Hall, they will just be verbally reprimanded.
