CHIANG RAI – Officials in Chang Kong have detained a 35-year-old Lao woman has been detained for bringing US$400,000 (13.3 million baht) into the country without declaring it.

Jaturong Khachornfung, chief of the Chiang Khong branch of the Marine Office, said marine officers spotted the woman at the Buk pier in Chiang Khong district of Chiang Rai on Thursday night.

He said the woman had entered after normal operating hours, so authorities asked to conduct a search. They found a box containing $400,000 in her possession.

The woman, identified as Mon Intapan, was taken to the Chiang Khong immigration checkpoint where she has been detained on charges of entering the country after border operating hours.

She has also been charged with bringing in foreign currency exceeding $20,000 without declaring the amount to customs officials.
