CHIANG RAI –  – An earthquake of 6 magnitude struck Chiang Rai and Myanmar on Monday causing some damage to buildings and roads and knocking goods off shelves in shops but there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The Thai Geological Survey said the earthquake measured a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and was centered 9 kilometers south of Mae Lao, Thailand, and 27 kilometers southwest of Chiang Rai.

It was centered at a relatively shallow depth of 7.4 kilometers. Shallow quakes are generally felt more widely.

“There has been minor damage to buildings in Chiang Rai itself, some shops have goods scattered about and we’re seeing cracks in buildings,” a Chiang Rai police officer told Reporters

The head of a Buddha statue fell at the Udomwaree Temple in Chiang Rai, according to monk Phra Pathompong. A residential building at the temple also had exterior cracks and ceiling damage, and nearby residents reported only minor damage in their homes, he said.

People ran out of the main airport in Chiang Rai, a northern Thai city near the epicenter, and cracks were reported on roads.

Damages were being assessed in Chiang Rai’s Phan district, where ceilings fell in some homes, said Wander Radchompoo, head of the district. A damaged road in the district had multiple cracks, the worst a waist-high gash about the length of three vehicles.

The Geological Office initially said the quake was of 6.3 magnitude but later downgraded it. It was at the relatively shallow depth of 7.4 km (4.5 miles).

Chiang Rai, in the mountainous north of Thailand, is near the borders of both Myanmar and Laos. The epicenter was in a largely rural area of small villages, farms and forests. See Full Report Click Here
