3.6 Eathquake Shakes Mae Suay and Mae Lao Districts in Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI – The Seismological Bureau of the Meteorological Department reported that a 3.6 magnitude earthquake shook Chiang Rai Province on Wednesday morning, the epicenter was about two kilometers underground in Mae Suay district.

The earthquake, which occurred at 3.16am, was also felt in Mae Lao district of the province.

There were no reports of damage or casualties.

On May 5, 2014, a quake measuring at 6.3 on the Richter scale, caused widespread damages to houses, government offices, archaeological sites and roads 609 villages in seven districts of Chiang Rai.  Effects from the quake and after shocks were also felt in Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Nan, Phayao, Loei, NongKhai and even high rise buildings in Bangkok.

The cause of the quake was due to the movement of the powerful Phayao fault line and two small fault lines Mae Lao and Hat Parn.
