CHAI NAT – At least 20 passengers were injured when the interprovincial bus they were travelling in plunged into a ditch after bursting a tyre in Muang district of Chai Nat Province on Friday morning.

Pol Lt Col Patikorn Harnhatthakit, a duty officer at Muang police station said the bus hit a road barrier before plunging into the ditch.

The impact of the crash caused injuries to about 20 passengers – including a monk, elderly people and children. Many had head injuries. Rescue workers rushed them to a nearby hospital.

Driver Sawet Khamsen, 43, told police that one lane of the road was closed in that area. He slowed down to allow a pickup truck travelling in front to change lanes. Suddenly, the back left tyre of his bus burst, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The bus then plunged into the ditch.

Pol Lt Col Patikorn took Mr Sawet to the station for further questioning.
