Young Tourist Injured after Startling Elephant in Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI – The Chiang Rai Provincial Police along with the patrol police went down to Chiang Rai Beach to check on a tourist who has been injured as a result of an elephant attack.

Police officers have identified the victim as 18 year-old Rojana Saengthong, who was then quickly rushed to the hospital. The victim’s friend and the mahout of the elephant that attacked her were also at the scene awaiting further questioning from the police.

The victim’s friend revealed that as Ms. Rojana was going to pick up a swim ring, one of the elephants panicked and kicked her in the thigh. At this point, the police have taken the mahout into custody to interrogate him further and to investigate whether he has a valid license in owning these elephants. In addition, the police have seized all the elephants to prevent them from harming other tourists.
