US Military Aircraft Crashes off Japan's Yakushima Island with Eight Onboard

(CTN News) – Near Yakushima Island in southwestern Japan, a US military plane that was carrying eight people on board crashed.

Near the collision scene, one individual was found deceased, according to Japan’s Coast Guard.

According to NHK, a Japanese news outlet, the CV-22 Osprey hybrid plane was attempting a landing at Yakushima Airport when one of its engines caught fire. To date, the United States has made no such statement.

Ospreys, a type of aircraft that can switch between helicopter and turboprop modes, have tragically been engaged in several crashes that have claimed lives.

The plane that crashed on Wednesday was reportedly its route from the Iwakuni base in Yamaguchi prefecture’s western side to the Kadena base in Okinawa’s southwestern corner.

According to Japan’s defense ministry, at 14:40 local time (05:40 GMT) on Wednesday, the plane vanished from radar.

A distress call was received five minutes later by the Coast Guard, informing them that the plane had crashed.

This prompted the deployment of two helicopters and six boats to the area. According to a spokesman who talked with the BBC around 16:00, the helicopters found what appeared to be a portion of the plane along with a life raft.

Both the US and Japanese governments eventually altered the original passenger list, which had said six individuals on board.

Off the coast of Yakushima, it published images of what appears to be the plane’s debris.

According to a witness who spoke with local television, the plane was circling until it went boom and crashed into the water on Wednesday.

According to authorities in the area, another Osprey plane that was supposedly circling the plane landed without incident at Yakushima.

Located south of Japan’s Kyushu island lies Yakushima, which is in Kagoshima prefecture.

Japan is home to about 50,000 American troops.

While conducting a military drill for locally based forces in northern Australia in August, a different model of Osprey crashed, killing three US marines out of the twenty-three on board.

While attempting to land at sea off the northern coast of Australia in 2017, an Osprey crashed after snagging the rear of a transport vessel, resulting in the deaths of three marines.
