Torrential Rains Causes Flooding and Road Damage in Chiang Khong District
CHIANG RAI – The Provincial Public Works and Town & Country Planning Office of Chiang Rai has agreed to close off the road along the Mekong River in Chiang Khong district, due to recent flood damage.
Over 100 meters of the reinforced concrete road has begun to collapse, with some areas as much as a meter deep in floodwaters. Further cracks in the road have also been found.
Mayor of Chiang Khong Municipality, Chalerm Tawiya joined a survey of the roadway conducted by engineers from the Provincial Public Works and Town & Country Planning Office. They concluded that the road must be closed off for the safety of commuters. The office will now conduct a further analysis to plan repairs.
Meanwhile, flooding was reported to be affecting Mae Chan, Mae Kham, Mae Pae, Mae Pae, Ban Huay Nam Yen and Ban Sae sub-districts with both houses, roads and agricultural land inundated with water.
The Royal Thai Army along with emergency services workers were reported to be assisting villagers with flood mitigation and repairs.
