(CTN NEWS) – As an increasing number of creators turn to artificial intelligence as a tool for their artistic expression, there is a growing demand for greater transparency regarding the involvement of AI in content creation.

In response to this concern, TikTok has recently announced the upcoming launch of a new tool designed to empower creators to label their AI-generated content.

Enhancing Transparency: TikTok’s Efforts to Automatically Label AI-Generated Content

Additionally, the platform is actively exploring methods for automatically identifying and labeling AI-generated content.

TikTok’s decision to introduce AI labeling stems from the recognition that AI-generated content has the potential to bewilder or mislead viewers.

While TikTok had previously updated its policy to address synthetic media, mandating that individuals label AI content featuring realistic images, audio, or video (such as deepfakes), the platform aims to enhance user comprehension and mitigate the dissemination of deceptive information.

Under TikTok’s policy, realistic AI-generated images that lack proper disclosure can be subject to removal.

However, the challenge extends beyond the realm of deliberate deception through AI manipulation. Some AI-generated content resides in a gray area, blurring the lines between authenticity and artifice.

In such cases, increased transparency is generally welcomed by end users, enabling them to discern whether the content they are consuming has undergone significant editing or was generated using artificial intelligence.

TikTok’s latest tool, now being introduced, not only simplifies compliance with its existing policy concerning synthetic media but also enables creators to label any content that has been entirely generated by AI or significantly edited using AI.

This tool will be accessible to creators during the video upload process, and TikTok does not expect creators to retroactively label their past videos.

Upon utilizing this new tool, TikTok will display a message beneath the video creator’s username, indicating that the video has been labeled as AI-generated.

TikTok’s Approach to AI Content Labeling and Detection Advancements

Importantly, TikTok will not impose penalties on creators who choose not to label AI-generated content that falls outside the scope of the existing synthetic media policy.

Furthermore, TikTok is actively working on developing an automated system for detecting and labeling AI content.

Beginning this week, the platform will initiate testing of an “AI-generated” label, which will ultimately apply to any content it identifies as having been edited or created with AI.

While TikTok refrains from divulging the precise mechanisms of its AI content detection technology, citing concerns about potential circumvention by malicious actors, it has disclosed that it will experiment with various detection models for AI content.

Additionally, TikTok is exploring partnerships that can enhance AI detection by embedding AI labels directly into the content.

The practice of labeling AI-generated content is becoming increasingly common among major platforms, with both OpenAI and Google announcing their own AI detection capabilities in recent months.

Instagram is also working on a feature to indicate when content has been created or edited using AI, and the European Union is advocating for AI content labeling as a general practice in its battle against disinformation.

As part of its commitment to transparency, TikTok will rename all its effects that employ AI by explicitly incorporating “AI” into their names.

Advancing AI Transparency on TikTok: New Labeling Changes and Educational Initiatives

Previously, TikTok did not disclose this information, even when filters like the Bold Glamor filter gained attention for their advanced facial transformation capabilities.

With these labeling changes, users will easily identify which of TikTok’s filters involve AI. TikTok’s updated guidelines for Effect House creators will also include similar requirements.

TikTok collaborated with its Safety Advisory Councils and consulted with industry experts, including MIT’s Dr. David G. Rand, whose research focuses on user responses to different AI labels.

Consequently, TikTok settled on the term “AI-generated,” which is widely understood across demographic groups.

Additionally, TikTok plans to release educational videos and media literacy resources in the coming weeks to enhance users’ understanding of AI.

These updates build upon TikTok’s previous initiatives related to AI in media, including its commitment in February to the Partnership on AI’s Responsible Practices for Synthetic Media.

This initiative established industry best practices for AI transparency and responsible innovation.

TikTok also collaborated with the nonprofit Digital Moment in August to host roundtable discussions with young people, gaining insights into their perspectives on AI advancements online.

The rollout of AI labels will commence today, but users may not immediately encounter them until the rollout is complete.
