Thailand’s Sixth Day Accident Toll for the New Years Holiday 375 Killed, 3612 Injured

On Jan 2, which is the last day of official holidays, 51 people died and 431 others were injured in a total of 400 traffic accident cases.

CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s Road Safety Centre has reported it’s day six report of Thailand’s “7 Dangerous Days” with a total of 375 people killed and 3,612 injured in six days of it’s 7-day road safety campaign.

On Jan 2, which is the last day of official holidays, 51 people died and 431 others were injured in a total of 400 traffic accident cases.

The Road Safety Centre spokesman Maj Gen Simsak Somrak said Suphan Buri, Buri Ram, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Nonthaburi recorded the highest death rates of three each on Jan 2, while Chiang Mai having the highest injuries of 17.

Major causes of fatal accidents are drink driving (40.25%), speeding (28.5%), while vehicles involved in most fatal accidents are motorcycles (79.76%).

In total, he said there were altogether 3,456 traffic cases in six days of the 7-day period with Udon Thani having the highest traffic accidents of 120 cases.

Nakhon Ratchasima had the highest accumulated death toll of 15 while Udon Thani had the highest injuries of 124.

Meanwhile director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Mr Chayapol Thitisak said the death toll during the past six days from Dec 28-Jan 2 was less than last year’s seven day campaign.
