CHIANG RAI – The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) will soon organize the International Media Familiarization Trip 2016, which will promote Chiang Rai province as a venue for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).
TCEB Chairman of the Board Weerasak Kowsurat on Monday invited foreign members of the press on a trip to the province. Various activities are planned for the participants to learn more about Chiang Rai’s history and culture. The TCEB Chairman stated that the provincial capital holds a lot of potential as one of the biggest cities in the North and part of the Golden Triangle, a strategic area encompassing northern Thailand, eastern Myanmar, western Laos and southern China. The Golden Triangle is a strong area for investment that is accessible to all four countries, with rich natural resources. Chiang Rai has a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful culture, and accommodations that are well-suited for holding MICE events effectively.
Mr. Weerasak said a report by the International Congress and Convention Association has ranked Thailand 27th of the world’s top destinations, rising from its previous ranking at 33rd. Within the Asia Pacific region, the report ranks Thailand 6th after Japan, China, South Korea, Australia and Singapore.
The Kingdom welcomed about 500,000 MICE travelers from October 2015 to March 2016, generating 40 billion baht in revenue. MICE travelers mostly hail from China, India, Singapore, Malaysia, and the United States. The TCEB Chairman expects the local MICE industry to grow at least 5 percent this year, projecting more than a million MICE travelers and 92 billion baht in revenue.
