Thailand Customs Seize 17.5 Kg of Cocaine

Thailand Customs officials report seizing more than 17 kilograms of cocaine and arresting four foreigners in two separate cases.

In the first case, a South African man was arrested by customs officers at Phuket airport for allegedly smuggling 1.5 kilograms of cocaine worth US$125,000.

On Friday, Thailand Customs Department said that a 29-year-old South African man was allegedly acting suspiciously after arriving from Ethiopia on June 9.

He was sent to the Thalang Hospital in Phuket province for an X-ray after being detained and was found to have 115 pellets of cocaine in his stomach. None of the items found in his luggage were illegal.

In the second case, three Brazilians were arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport after customs officers found in their luggage 16 kilograms of cocaine valued at US$1.3 million.

Upon arrival from Brazil, the three suspects were arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport in Thailand after customs officials discovered 16kg of cocaine hidden in five pieces of luggage.

The cocaine is wrapped in carbon paper and plastic wrap.

As a result, all of the suspects have been detained pending further legal action.

The Customs Department has stepped up efforts to stop the smuggling of illegal drugs at airports since the country’s reopening on June 1, according to a Customs spokesperson.
