BANGKOK – Anupharp Thirarath, Deputy TAT governor for domestic marketing, said on Thursday, more than 400 hotels, travel agents and airlines are offering 50% discounts to mid-week vacationers to help fill empty rooms and seats during the low season, at the four-day fair in Bangkok.

Hundreds of operators are offering half-price tour packages at the Weekday Special Travel Fair organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok.

“More than 40% of Thai tourists go on holiday on festive and long holidays and this causes congestion at tourist destinations. But only a handful of tourists travel on weekdays. This is an economic loss. The fair is helping local economies and giving cost-effective vacations to tourists,” he said.

He expected some 200,000 visitors and 200 million baht to change hands at the fair, which will continue until Sunday.

Each visitor who buys at least 5,000 baht worth of tourism-related products and services at the fair has the right to order a luxury hotel room, an air ticket and many other products for only 100 baht, Mr Anupharp said
