CHIANG RAI -The Governor of Chiang Rai Province Pongsak Wangsamer has kicked off a tea and coffee festival to give visitors an opportunity to try freshly-brewed drinks by local growers.

The event is taking place between August 21 and 23 at Central Plaza Chiangrai where 25 selected entrepreneurs are showcasing organic tea and coffee products from the best plantations of Chiang Rai. Visitors will also be able to see an exhibition of coffee and tea industries and demonstrations of coffee and tea processing.

The organizers, consisting of Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand Coffee & Tea Association and Central Pattana Public Company Limited, want to use the event to promote tourism, and boost competitiveness of Thai coffee and tea industries and related businesses.

Their Majesties the King and Queen endorsed the idea of growing coffee in the North to eradicate opium cultivation and deforestation. Their support not only helped Northern agriculturists enjoy a better livelihood but also made Northern coffee become widely known at national and international levels.

The three day event but the first two days will also feature the 12th Thailand Barista-Latte Art Championship.  Should be interesting see the artwork.

Maybe there will be tasting opportunities for the different coffees and teas, allowing folks to make some good decisions on which coffees to choose for their house offerings.
