Celebrities and businessmen launch a cycling club that promises to help society

BANGKOK – Set up by a group of celebrities with a passion for two-wheelers, the brand new The Life Cycling Club aims to encourage Thais to protect nature and foster a sharing society.

“Life Cycling or Cycling for Life is based on four factors – health, environment, passion and sharing,” says Bordin Boonvisut, one of the club’s founders and vice president of Toyota Mahanakorn in Thailand, chatting with The Nation after the recent launch of the club at The Emporium.

“If we are healthy, we can ride a bike everywhere, even to Hua Hin or Chiang Mai. I never thought I could do it because I was overweight! If we only drive cars in the city and never ride a bike, we don’t understand the extent to which our urban centres suffer from pollution. Anyone who is fond of and concerned about nature will find joy in cycling. For me personally, the bike is the best way to get close to nature. We share through eco-friendly and social activities like coral replanting, releasing turtles and going to historic sites like Ayutthaya to learn about sword-making. Driving a car causes us to miss so many beautiful things on the way.”

“My life has improved a lot since I started cycling,” says Krishnayos Purannasanriddhi, the club’s executive director and director of Yuma Motors. Four years ago, he swapped his Ducati motorbike for a Moots titanium road bike and Colnago trail triathlon bike.

Club president Patee Sarasin, chief executive officer of Nok Air, is teaming up with Bordin, Krishnayos, and Groove Riders’ singer Burin Boonvisut to launch its first social-sharing activity through the donation of 200 bicycles to schools in remote areas.

“We believe we can influence other people to change their lives,” says Krishnayos, quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s saying, ‘Your health is your real wealth’.”

“Life Cycling isn’t a club for competing but for social sharing. Cycling isn’t just adding days to my life but adding life to my days. I’ve been riding my bike for more than a year and can honestly say I feel happier,” says Bordin.

He’s also hoping MR Sukhumbhand Paribra, in his second term as Bangkok governor, will do more for the city’s cyclists.

“We really need places for biking that are not dangerous for pedestrians or bikers. Public parks like Vachirabenjatas or Benjakiti aren’t suitable. The most suitable place is the wide road adjacent to the runway of Suvarnnabhumi Airport where we usually ride every Tuesday and Thursday,” says Bordin.

Roll up, sign up

Membership of the club costs Bt500 and comes with a black T-shirt and bike bottle.
