Teachers’ Day Celebrated in Chiang Rai and Northern Provinces

CHIANG RAI –  Pongsak Wangsamer  Governor of  Chiang Rai Province chaired the event at Samakkhi Withayakhom School in the central district of Chiang Rai. The event saw over 1,000 teachers and educational staff members attending.

Mr.Pongsak said the event was intended to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 81st birthday anniversary on August 12, 2013 and also highlight the importance of teachers’ contribution to the educational scene. This year’s National Teachers Day celebration marks the 58th of its kind after the Teachers Council of Thailand first organized the event in 1957. The celebration in Chiang Rai included a ceremony to present certificates and plaques of honor to outstanding teachers and other educational personnel.

In Tak, the Teachers’ Day was celebrated under the theme of “The Mother and Teacher of the Land”. The event was chaired by the provincial governor, Mr. Suriya Prasatbuntitya, and was attended by school administrators, heads of government units and provincial educational personnel. The event started in the morning with alms-offering to 30 monks, followed by religious rites dedicated to respected teachers who have passed away. The governor also awarded outstanding teachers as a show of gratitude to their contribution to the society.

Teachers in Nan province also held Teacher’s Day activities beginning with a merit-making ceremony, followed by presentation of certificates to outstanding teachers and schools. Among the awards were trophies to honor schools which have acted as prototypes in energy conservation.

Teacher’s day (วันครู Wan Kruu)

Teacher’s day (วันครู Wan Kruu) is celebrated every year on January 16th in Thailand, it is also a school holiday. It is the day that teachers gather together to remember their first teachers.

 

Thai people believe that any field of work will have a teacher such as actors, dramatist, magician, astrologist and even boxers. Therefore, we need to have a Wai Kru ceremony to worship or respect the teacher.

 

The highlights of the day include religious activities, a ceremony of paying respect to teachers and activities to strengthen unity among teachers.

There is also วันไหว้ครู /Wan Wai Kru/ or Teachers’ Appreciation Day which is held shortly after the beginning of the term, on the first Thursday of June, as Thursday is traditionally the day of wisdom and teachers.

The Students also recite the wai kru chant (บทไหว้ครู) , which expresses respect for, and gratitude to the teachers, and asks for the teachers’ blessing of their studies
