South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu Dead at 90

South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, an anti-apartheid icon and Noel Peace Prize Laureate, died on Sunday at aged 90.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said, “The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter in our nation’s farewell to a generation of extraordinary South Africans who have given liberation to the country.”

“Archbishop Tutu was an unmatched patriot; a person of integrity and pragmatism who gave meaning to the biblical insight that faith without works is dead,” he said.

In addition to his extraordinary intellect, integrity, and invincibility against the forces of apartheid, he also showed tenderness and vulnerability in his compassion towards those who suffered oppression, injustice, and violence under apartheid, as well as oppressed and downtrodden people around the world.”

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his tireless activism against white minority rule in South Africa.

Tutu was widely known for addressing South Africa’s shortcomings and injustices, even after the end of the racist apartheid regime. When Nelson Mandela became Africa’s first black president, the archbishop coined and popularized the term “Rainbow Nation.”

His past initiatives have included opposing homophobia within the Anglican Church, challenging Nelson Mandela over-generous salaries for cabinet ministers and also expressing strident criticism of the corruption that mushroomed under ex-president Jacob Zuma.

He advocated for international sanctions against apartheid from his position as archbishop and later fought for rights throughout the world. He was ordained at age 30.

As head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he led a harrowing journey into the past of South Africa. The commission brought apartheid’s horrors to light for the world.
