CHIANGRAI TIMES – Nolubabalo “Babsie” NobandaSouth African Nobanda Nolubabalo was arrested at customs in Bangkok, Thailand, after police found drugs in her dreadlocks’s mother is preparing to make her first trip abroad under cloudy skies, with her daughter re-appearing in court on Monday in Thailand.

Speaking from Grahamstown yesterday, Honjiswa Mcepu said that Nobanda has requested to have at least one family member in court to support her when she appears.

“I’m going there to lend her moral support. She has asked to see one of the family members. I’m looking forward to seeing her, as it’s been more than six months since we saw her,” said Mcepu.

Nobanda, 23, was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport in December, last year. She had 1.5kg of cocaine, worth more than R1m, woven into her fake dreadlocks.

“I’m a bit nervous right now as I’ve never been on a plane before, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said.

Nobanda’s first court appearance was in March. Police are expected to testify when the case resumes.

Babsie had left South Africa with her friend Sulezi Rwanqa, 25, for South America when she got arrested in the Asian country. Her friend has since returned home.

Nobanda became the 12th South African to be arrested for drug trafficking in Thailand last year. She faces life imprisonment if convicted.
