In The World Cup, South Africa Defeated a Go-Slow Australia Behind De Kock

(CTN News) – South Africa defeated five-time champions Australia by 134 runs on Thursday after Quinton de Kock hit his second successive century.

With the Proteas on 311-7, Australia lost six wickets with just 70 on the board and then focused solely on limiting the damage to their net run rate.

It took 55 balls for them to be dismissed for 177.

Despite losing both games, South Africa won its second game in a row. Australia lost both games.

When South Africa batted, five catches were dropped by Australia, who lost by six wickets to India.

Once they began chasing a 312-run target, their mood did not improve as South Africa’s fast bowlers consistently ripped through their top order.

Kagiso Rabada took three quick wickets before Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi dismissed Mitchell Marsh for seven and David Warner for thirteen.

Steve Smith was controversially lbw on review for 19, Josh Inglis clean bowled for five and Marcus Stoinis was caught by wicketkeeper De Kock down the legside for five by Rabada.

Stoinis appeared to have his hand off the bat when the ball brushed his glove on its way to De Kock, causing Australia to be unhappy with the decision.

Between, off-spinner Keshav Maharaj claimed dangerman Glenn Maxwell off his own bowling, as the Australian nicknamed “The Big Show” endured stage fright.

With seven pool matches to play in the marathon event, Australia went into damage limitation to ease the damage to their run rate.

After 25 overs, they had crept to 95-6 before Marnus Labuschagne (46) and Mitchell Starc (27) put on 69 for the seventh wicket.

With Tabraiz Shamsi wrapping up the tail, the innings collapsed in seven balls.

De Kock is ‘sick’ of me

The 30-year-old made his 19th ODI century off 90 balls with eight fours and five sixes, having also made a century in South Africa’s opener against Sri Lanka.

At the Ekana Stadium, where he plays for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, De Kock, who will retire from international cricket after the tournament, batting in familiar surroundings.

In the 35th over, Maxwell bowled him for 109 while attempting a reverse sweep.

At the innings break, Maxwell said, “I’m sick of watching him score runs. He’s a superstar.”.

De Kock departed before Aiden Markram took over the South Africa team on 197-3.

Markram made his 56th World Cup century off just 49 balls in the win over Sri Lanka, making the most of being dropped by Australia skipper Pat Cummins after making just one.

On 19 and 32, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was also dropped twice by Australia.

The Indian star was on 12 when Marsh dropped him in their opening match. A match-winning 85 was made by Kohli.

On 35, Warner caught Bavuma off Maxwell at midwicket.

De Kock and the skipper put on 108 for the first wicket.

After Markram was dismissed by Cummins, Jansen (26) and Miller (17) took the Proteas past 300.

Starc bowled a double-wicket maiden to dismiss Miller and Jansen in the final over.

Despite Starc dropping Miller and Stoinis giving Jansen a lifeline off Cummins, they should have been dismissed in the penultimate over.
