Over 100 Online Scammers Arrested in Tachileik Myanmar

Authorities in the border city of Tachileik, Myanmar have arrested over 100 people during a raid at a casino near the Chiang Rai-Myanmar border on Sunday. Locals said that soldiers and police had arrested Myanmar, Thai, and Chinese nationals.

They are currently being held in jail, and no more information about their whereabouts or identities is available. The operation took place on a facility in Tachileik, a city in Myanmar’s eastern Shan state, which housed an internet gambling den.

The Golden Triangle, which includes northern Thailand, eastern Myanmar, and southern Laos, is well-known for its gambling, trafficking, and fraud activities.

A citizen who asked not to be named for safety concerns said that the 1G1-7 Hotel in Tachileik, where the casino raid happened, was notorious for gambling, trafficking and fraud. The casino, which was opened behind the 1G1-7 Hotel, has been open for about a decade,” he told reporters.

“It was raided and people were arrested in the morning he said.”

Another Tachileik resident reported that there were hundreds of online gambling firms in the city’s 11 neighbourhoods and nearby towns. Many work in houses and hotels, he said. Houses are entirely rented, and the hotels were rented out by floors for operating [online casinos],” he went on to say. “Chinese and Thai nationals are also involved.”

Locals reported that online money scammers frequently disguise their enterprises as casinos. In 2023, more than 40,000 Chinese nationals were deported from Shan state for illegally living in Myanmar and operating in illegal companies and scam centres.

According to locals, this is the first time police have cracked down on scam centres in Tachileik, Myanmar.

The junta has not officially disclosed any information regarding Friday’s arrests. RFA contacted Shan state’s junta spokesperson, Khun Thein Maung, but he responded instantly.

However, pro-military groups on the social messaging app Telegram stated that the persons arrested in Tachileik were perpetrating online fraud as part of an organisation known as “Kyar Pyant.” According to one channel, junta security forces busted the Chinese gang that specialises in online fraud.

On February 9, the Myanmar Now stated that more than 50,000 foreigners, predominantly Chinese nationals, were deported from Myanmar for illegally remaining there between October 5 and February 8.

The transfer included 48,803 Chinese, 1,071 Vietnamese, 537 Thais, 133 Malaysians, 20 Koreans, and 18 Lao nationals, according to the announcement.

Tachileik, Myanmar, lies on the border with Thailand, bustling with trade and culture. This vibrant town offers a mix of traditional markets and modern amenities. Visitors can explore the local cuisine, browse through colorful handicrafts, and soak in the lively atmosphere.

The town’s strategic location makes it a popular stop for travelers crossing the border, creating a dynamic fusion of influences. Tachileik is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, filled with unique experiences and warm hospitality.
