Thai’s New Year Songkran festival between April 11 and April 15

 

CHIANG RAI – With Songkran Festival celebrations about to kick off in a week, Royal Thai Police today ordered all police to begin crime campaign, tighten control on alcoholic drink sales and increase mobile patrols to ensure that the people celebrate the festival with happiness and safety.

Royal Thai Police spokesman Pol Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri said the commissioner of the Royal Thai Police has voiced concern of the safety of the people during the seven dangerous day (April 9-16) during the water festival

He ordered all police to begin crime suppression campaign now, particularly on drug trafficking which is expected to rise, to tighten sales of alcoholic drinks in water splashing areas, and setting up more road checkpoints to check vehicles with drunk drivers.

The safety of the people and tourists was also a concern, the spokesman said and added that the commissioner ordered the police to take good care of them during the water celebration.

He said the police have Hotlines for people to call around the clock at No 1599 and 199 for help or report any inappropriate behaviour of water celebrations.

Tourism Authority of Thailand estimates as many as 400,000 Chinese tourists will visit the country for Thai’s New Year Songkran festival, April 11 and April 15, 2015.

Pollution in the North will likely affect travel in those regions, particularly Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, but other regions of the country should expect to see a major increase in tourists as the festival draws near.
