Rolling 1,000 km for Charity – ChiangRai to Pattaya
On the 15th of October, Kalle Kristensen and his team set off on their 1,000 km Roller-Skiing-Expedition from Chiang Rai to Pattaya. The plan? to roll an average of 60 km per day and reach the city of Pattaya by the 4th of November.
What’s the reason for this madness?!
Kalle, is a 67 year old free spirited Norwegian who, has been roller-skiing in Thailand for the last 8 years. Since moving from
Pattaya to Chiang Rai four years ago, the idea of skiing from Chiang Rai to Pattaya has always been a far-fetched fantasy for this visionary entrepreneur. Now, Kalle is set to realise his roller-skiing expedition dream and give back to his beloved Thai community!
Kalle, is a 67 year old free spirited NorwegianThe charity objective is to support education and primarily a local school in the small village of Mai Siwalai in Chiang Rai, which is in need of some upgrades. Mai Siwalai is the school in which Kalle’s Thai wife and most of her family attended as children – It’s a place that’s close to his home and very close to his heart- it’s also is in need of some serious renovation. More desks and chairs and a computer library are just a few things that the children of Mai Siwalai will greatly benefit from.
Like most of us, Kalle understands that looking after our children means giving the best opportunity available for them. We must secure their future through education.
Unfortunately, for the second year in a row, parts of Thailand have been devastated by flooding – But did this discourage Kalle? Absolutely not! His determination to give back to the Thai community while promoting the sport he loves so dearly, is stronger than ever. See you at the finish line!
What is roller-skiing?
Roller skiing is a non-snow equivalent to cross-country skiing. Emulating skis, elongated inline skates, with wheels at the ends, are used on tarmac. The skating/skiing action is very similar to actual cross-country skiing on snow.
First created as a summer training alternative, roller skiing has now grown into a competitive sport in its own right. Annual championships are held in various locations around the world. Most, if not all, national cross- country ski teams around the world roller ski during the off-season to simulate the ski motion.
The skiing technique applied on roller skis is very similar to the technique used on snow conditions. The back kick in classic technique is slightly different because roller skis do not slide backwards. There are no brakes on roller-skies.
