CHIANG MAI – Jatuporn Promphan Leader of United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship said Monday that the remarks made by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha and others that the government would proceed with stripping former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra of his police rank were just a ploy to distract public attention from the negative news affecting the government.

Talks about stripping Thaksin of his police rank dated back to 2006 when he was ousted in a bloodless coup and no action has been taken ever since, Thai PBS Reported.

He noted that the police rank has no effect whatsoever on Thaksin because he quit government service before entering politics.

The fact that Thaksin retain the police rank, a lieutenant colonel, before his name is intended to keep him reminded of His Majesty the King’s kindness for bestowing him the rank, said Jatuporn.
