Maj General Prawut Thawornsiri police spokesman revealed yesterday 400 police officers had been assigned to provide protection.

Two shootings took place on Thursday, and many people believe were politically motivated.

In the first incident, Mongkhon Weerawatpong was shot dead in a restaurant in Chiang Rai in broad daylight. Mongkhon, a village chief, had supported the reports, the Thai Pheu Party.

In another incident, a gunman opened fire at the house of Bang Bon Councilman Ruangklan Wicha, riddling his car with 10 bullet holes.

“The shooting took place just minutes after he entered the house Wicha. If it was still out, had suffered serious injuries,” said former Bangkok deputy Muangsiri Sakon.

Sakon and Wicha are affiliated with the Democratic Party.

Wicha has been campaigning for the elder brother of Pol Col Dr. SakonSamart Muangsiri. Samart is the Democratic candidate for deputy in the district of Bangkok Bang Bon.

“He has been helping with my campaign from morning until night. He has no enemies,” Samart said.

Prawut said Chiang Rai, Narathiwat and Nakhon Sawan provinces had been marked as needing special attention when it was possible election-related violence.

He said Bangkok and 15 other provinces including Chon Buri Samut Prakan and ranked as the need for vigilance, but not both.

Crime Suppression Division spokesman said Pol Colonel Prasopchok Prommoon task forces had been sent to the provinces with fierce political competition.

“We have investigators prepared directly before the election-related crimes,” he said.

The election will be held on 3 July.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday instructed the police to reinforce security before the elections.

“We must ensure that people can vote without fear,” said the premier.

Samart said the people would be shaken even if high-profile figures Wicha could face such direct threats.

On the night of Bangkok, many police officers have participated in a demonstration tactics on how to protect the candidates’ electoral violence during their campaigns.
