CHIANG RAI – According to the Meteorological Department, a high pressure cell from China is prevailing over Thailand’s Northeast, creating tropical storms and lowering the average temperature in the region by 4-6 degree Celsius. Residents in the Northern Provinces, Central Plains, and the East have been told to brace for heavy rains during April 10-14.

The weather bureau has warned that Thailand is expected to be hit by tropical storms during the festive Songkran period.

Meanwhile, in the South, a strong westerly wind from China is moving into the Gulf of Thailand and southern provinces, bringing heavy rains and strong winds. As strong winds are set to generate up to two-meter waves, all shipping should proceed with caution.

Forecasters have also predicted that during the Songkran period, from April 12-16, heavy downpours which will reduce the soaring temperature to 33-37 degree Celsius, can be expected in the North. Widespread thundershowers will strike many southern provinces including Nakorn Si Thammarat during April 11-15.
