BANGKOK – Liverpool Football Club have confirmed that they will play a pre-season friendly in Bangkok Thailand this summer.

The Reds will play a game, likely to be against the Thailand national team, at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok on Sunday, 28th July 2013.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Rena shows a Thai national flag to promote the club’s pre-season visit to Thailand in July.

The match will no doubt be accompanied by open training sessions and promotional events in association with the club’s sponsor, Standard Chartered.

The club hope the appearance there, the first since 2009, will continue to build and develop the club’s brand and support in the country, where over 10 million fans are thought to be Reds.

Brendan Rodgers says the club are looking forward to making the trip East.

“The players who went on the last tour to Thailand are really excited about going back. I’ve heard a lot about the passion and dedication of the fans in Thailand and we plan to bring them some great football.”

Liverpool are one of the most popular English Premier League clubs in Thailand, despite not winning their domestic championship since 1990, with an estimated 14 million followers.

As reported in February, Liverpool are also expected to play a game in Australia, looking to build on their fan base down under.

A friendly in Melbourne is on the cards, and The Reds will also visit Indonesia as part of their deal with with the nation’s biggest airline Garuda International.

Liverpool are seventh in the English Premier League table with 48 points from 31 matches. The team hopes for a late-season surge to secure a place in the lucrative Uefa Champions League next season.
