Driving Miss Daisy” will be performed at The Legend Resort Hotel on May 12 beginning at 7:00 pm.

CHIANGRAI TIMES – The Gate Theatre Company is a non-profit foundation which exists to enrich the cultural life of Chiangmai        through the production of high quality plays in the English language. The company began life as the personal initiative of the Artistic Director, Stephan Turner who worked many years in professional theatre in Chicago and New York. Teaming up with various talented Chiangmai residents of diverse ages and nationalities, he has produced a number of well-renowned plays such as The Dodo Bird, Strange Snow and The Odd Couple. The common denominators underlying this selection are complex relationships and self-revelation leading ultimately to personal growth.

Until now the Gate Theatre has not attempted to present any of its productions outside Chiangmai. May 12 this year thus represents a new departure for the company when it comes to Chiangrai to perform the award-winning “Driving Miss Daisy.” This is a one act comedy dramatizing the evolution of the attitudes of an elderly Jewish-American matron from the perspective of her black chauffeur, Hoke who has been imposed upon her by her son after she had caused another serious road accident.

For a city its size, Chiangrai receives more than its share of concerts and other cultural events sponsored by the Alliance franchise, the local hotels and Mae Fah Luang Foundation. Until now, however lives theatre in English has been limited to school productions by the Family Learning Center/Chiang Rai International Christian School. So the organizers of this event are determined to promote the play widely in order to attract sufficient attendance to persuade the Gate Theatre to return to our locale regularly.

“Driving Miss Daisy” will be performed at The Legend Resort Hotel on May 12 beginning at 7:00 pm. Tickets cost 500 Baht for adult including two glasses of wine or beer plus finger food at a reception after the performance with the cast. Students will pay 250 Baht including soft drinks at the reception. For reservations and additional information contact The Legend Resort Hotel at 053-910 400 or email info@TheLegend-ChiangRai.com

There will be a second presentation the next day again at The Legend beginning at 1 pm oriented to high school students and their teachers. Gate Theatre devotes a lot of time and energy to educating and cultivating young talent in Chiangmai and hopes to inspire similar enthusiasm among the youth of Chiangrai.

More information about the Gate Theatre can be found on its website www.gate-theater.com. There is no shortage of information about “Driving Miss Daisy” on the internet. – Author Bruce Kennedy
