Layoffs At Amazon: The Company Fires Advertising Employees

(CTN News) – Earlier this week, reported that Amazon fired some advertising team employees. There have been 9,000 job cuts announced by Amazon in recent rounds of layoffs, bringing the total number of people given pink slips to 27,000, as a result of the last round of layoffs earlier this year.

In the history of the e-commerce, this is the largest layoff in terms of the number of employees. In the latest round of firings, it is not known how many employees have been terminated.

More layoffs across Amazon’s advertising team have been announced

According to a memo shared with, the latest round of layoffs has been impacted only the ads team at the company. It was found that the first round of job cuts affected the retail, devices, recruiting, and HR departments, while the second round impacted employees across the ad business, cloud computing, Twitch live streaming, and HR departments.

According to the report, Amazon’s vice president of advertising, Paul Kotas, shared an internal memo informing the employees about the layoffs when the layoffs were announced.

In a memo shared by the company, it states that, throughout the 2023 planning process, as Andy shared a couple of weeks ago, we have been scrupulously prioritizing resources to maximize the benefits to our customers and to ensure the long-term health of our company.

In Ads, this process has included refocusing resources, transferring team members to other functions, slowing down or stopping some programs, or concluding that we did not have the right skills in place to address our priorities.

The result of this has been that we have made deeply-considered decisions about how to best go forward, which has resulted in the elimination of roles in a small percentage of our organization.”

Package of severance benefits

There is a severance package that will be offered to the impacted employees in the next 60 days, which includes full pay and benefits. It is important to note, however, that impacted employees in New York and New Jersey will receive the benefits for 90 days.

Moreover, all impacted employees will receive outplacement support to assist them in finding another job in the near future.

Layoffs at Amazon as reported by Andy Jassy

A letter to the company’s stakeholders was recently written by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in which he talked about the 27,000 layoffs the company had made since last year.

It was revealed to me that “Over the past couple of months, we have conducted a thorough review across the entire organization, business by business, invention by invention, and asked ourselves whether we were confident in each initiative’s ability to generate enough revenue, operating income, free cash flow, and return on investment in the long run. As a result, some of our businesses had to be closed as a result of this.
