CHIANGMAI – Lawyers for 93-year-old Australian citizen Karl Joseph Kraus accused of multiple sex abuse of children argued in Chiang Mai court Monday that he is too sick to go on trial.

Lawyers told the court their client has cancer and dementia, and should be freed rather than tried.

German born Karl Joseph Kraus, from Western Australia, is accused of abusing four sisters for almost two years. The youngest was aged five when the alleged abuse began.

Mr Kraus was arrested trying to flee Thailand while on bail last year and sent back to Thailand.

He is charged with abusing four young Thai sisters for two years. The youngest child was five when the alleged abuse began.

When they arrested Mr Kraus in 2010, police said they found more than 100 photos of naked children on his computer, and he was in some of the photos.

Kraus pleaded not guilty to rape and sexual assault and was granted bail of 400,000 baht (A$12,000).
