Israel Agreed To Stop Gaza Attacks During Ramadan, Says Biden

(CTN News) – According to U.S. President Joe Biden, Israel has agreed to halt military activity in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as Hamas studies a proposal for a force that would include a pause in fighting and an exchange of prisoner-hostages.

It is the most serious attempt to end the conflict that erupted in October last year in weeks, according to a senior source close to truce talks in Paris. This proposal would allow hospitals and bakeries in Gaza to be repaired and 500 aid trucks to enter the enclave every day.

A typical Ramadan begins on March 10th and ends on April 9th.

It’s Ramadan, and the Israelis have agreed not to engage in any activities during Ramadan, too, in order to give us time to free all the hostages,” Biden said on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”.

Due to the high death count among Palestinians, Israel risked losing international support, adding that it promised to evacuate Palestinians from Rafah in Gaza’s south before intensifying its campaign there to destroy Hamas.

According to Biden, in a statement broadcast on Tuesday, the two sides have agreed in principle to end hostilities while hostages are released. It was his hope that a ceasefire would be in place by Monday in the conflict.

“Too many innocent people are being killed in Rafah. Israel has slowed down the attacks,” Biden said, adding that a temporary ceasefire would jumpstart the Palestinian state-building process.

There is no chance of a two-state solution being reached under Netanyahu’s leadership.

Palestinian prisoners would be exchanged for Israeli hostages at a 10 to 1 ratio under the draft proposal.

As part of the draft, Hamas will also release 40 Israeli hostages, including women, children, the elderly and the sick, while Israeli forces will free around 400 Palestinian prisoners without re-arresting them, the source said.

In an effort to prevent an Israeli assault on Gaza’s city of Rafah, where more than a million displaced people are sheltering at the southern edge of the enclave, mediators have stepped up efforts to secure a ceasefire.

On Oct. 7, Hamas killed 1,200 people and captured 253 hostages, causing Israel to launch a ground attack on Gaza, which resulted in nearly 30,000 deaths, Gaza health authorities confirmed.
