Irish Fugitive Arrested in Bangkok at the Request of British Embassy

BANGKOK – Thailand’s Immigration authorities have have arrested an alleged Irish fugitive, wanted in Ireland for robbery and assault charges, the bureau chief announced on Friday.

Immigration Bureau acting chief Pol Lt-General Sompong Chingduang said Jonathan Turley, 37 was arrested at the request of the British Embassy.

Embassy officials alleged that the man was wanted in northern Ireland for multiple crimes.

According to the Thai media Turley once launched a frenzied knife attack on a man in Northern Ireland for mistaking his scarf for a towel.

In April last year, the Irishman had to be removed from a Belfast court and taken to the cells after he became uncontrollable while mocking and insulting the female judge trying his case.

Criminal experts in Northern Ireland have gone on record before a court there to give evidence that Turley is the highest risk category for offenders in the British criminal system.

Lt-General Sompong said that Mr Turley was a tricky character to arrest.

The Irish Fugitive had changed his address in Bangkok and northern Thailand several times to stay ahead of the police.

Police learned that the Irish Fugitive liked muay thai and often took part in matches. They later tracked him down to a condo in Sukhumvit Soi 58, which he shared with his Thai girlfriend.

Arrangements are now being made to have this violent and dangerous offender sent back to Northern Ireland to face justice.
