CHIANG RAI – A hailstorm has struck the province of Chiang Rai for the second time, damaging signs and causing huge tree branches to fall on private property.

The road in front of the Chiang Rai Municipality was filled with hailstones the size of a lime, while a local community fair regularly held for visitors and tourists to shop for gifts and souvenirs was also affected by the storm.

The Chiang Rai Public Disaster Prevention and Relief Center, reported that the storm originated from a moderate high pressure area that is covering the upper part of Thailand. At the same time, the westerly wind from neighboring Myanmar is moving in to cover Thailand’s Northern region, causing heavy rainstorms producing gusty winds and possible hailstorms in some areas of Chiang Rai province.

The hailstorm reported in the province has also caused power outage for several hours while gloomy weather is expected to last throughout the day.
