CHIANG RAI – Provincial Governor Prajon Prachsakul presided the opening ceremony of the seminar at Teak Garden Resort, a seminar to mobilize the development of special economic zones and promote public participation.

Governor Prajon told attendees that the Special Economic Zone Policy Committee wanted special economic zones to be established in Mae Sai, Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong districts due their proximity to Thailand’s neighboring nations and the potential to become gateways to the Chinese market.

The Governor claimed farmers’ unwillingness to give up their farmlands and their demand for expensive compensation in exchange for land reclamation had made it impossible to set up the special economic zones over the past three years. Prajon has already discussed the matter with the Ministry of the Interior to find ways to ensure the development of the special economic zones proceeds without complications.

The governor said such a development would benefit both investors and local residents, adding that there would be no significant impact on the environment. Prajon went on to say that another attempt would be made in fiscal 2019 to get the development of the special economic zones up and running.

Representatives of governmental agencies as well as members of the public and private sectors participated in the seminar where they were able to share their thoughts and concerns.

Another seminar is being held today (Wednesday) in Chiang Rai to provide a platform for academics and local government officials to discuss the pros and cons of special economic zones.
