Government Officials Hold Seminar on Lessons Learned from Chiang Rai’s 6.3 Earthquake

CHIANG RAI – The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) is preparing to hold a seminar on lessons learned from the Chiang Rai earthquake in May to establish better procedures in dealing with future natural disasters.
According to DMR Acting Director-General Supoj Jermsawatdipong, the 6.3 Richter scale quake that rocked Mae Lao District of Chiang Rai Province on May 5th has generated more than 3,000 aftershocks over the course of 5 months.
The earthquake had tremendously damaged buildings, residence, personal and public assets, affecting the lives of the locals both physically and mentally. The event is also considered to the greatest quake disaster in Thai history.
Mr. Supoj indicated that several related governmental units have surveyed, logged, and compiled data about the area hit by the quake for educational purposes in the future.
Meanwhile, the DMR and the Thailand Research Fund along with 2 occupational promotion agencies would hold a seminar on the lessons learnt from the earthquake in Chiang Rai on November 20th at the Sukosol Bangkok Hotel.
The meeting aims to educate the public about the experiences from the first major earthquake in Thailand’s history.
