Google Chrome And Calendar No Longer Supported On Aging Android Devices.

(CTN News) – Developers face significant time and cost challenges when supporting older Android versions, despite Google’s continued efforts to do so for several years after their release.

Unfortunately, many phones lack the necessary processing power to run newer apps, making it a difficult task.

As per a recent blog post by Assemble Debug, a user known for discovering new flags in popular Google apps, the company is contemplating discontinuing support for Calendar and Chrome on Android Nougat 7.1.

In case you are utilizing a device that operates on the seven-year-old operating system, Chrome v119 will be the final version that is compatible. Google has decided to discontinue support for this widely used web browser with the release of Chrome v120, which is scheduled to be launched next month.

According to the blog, Google has introduced a new flag called “UnsupportedOperatingSystem__enabled” in the latest version of Google Calendar. Once enabled, a pop-up message will appear, urging users to upgrade to Android Oreo 8.0 or higher if they wish to continue using the app.

Google has not yet announced a specific date for ending Calendar support on Android Nougat. However, developers may find it financially burdensome to continue supporting older operating systems, especially if they have only a small number of users.

Earlier this year, Google released updated statistics on Android version distribution through Android Studio. These statistics revealed that Android Nougat 7.1 was running on approximately three percent of all Android devices.

If you wish to continue using Chrome and Calendar on Android Nougat 7.1, you may need to remain on the current version of the app and exclude them from the update list.

However, we strongly advise against doing so, as using older app versions can leave your device vulnerable to attacks and compromise its security.
