Food Delivery Apps May Contribute To Obesity Reduction

(CTN News) – According to published research published on Wednesday, app-based Food Delivery Apps may play a significant role in decreasing obesity by emphasizing food options with fewer calories more prominently on their websites.

According to Guardian reports, the study sponsored by Nesta, a UK-based, health-oriented charity, shows that users of a food delivery app, which is simulated to offer low-calorie options on its site, reduced their calorie intake by up to 15% when using that app.

The findings of the study, which were presented at the European Congress of Obesity in Dublin, were based on three randomized controlled trials that were conducted using the simulated food delivery app.

In the study, 23,783 adults participated, of whom 23783 were males and 23783 were females.

In each trial, participants were asked to choose a meal for themselves like they would in real life, and then their basket at checkout was weighed to find out how many calories they had in their basket.”

The study examined a number of interventions within the app, including pre-selecting smaller portions by default, arranging lower-calorie foods more prominently, and showing calorie labels. There was also a control group where no changes were made to the simulated app.

In the trials where the app was changed, the average number of calories consumed in the control group was 1,408 kcal, while in the trials where the app was not changed, the average number of calories consumed was 1,317 kcal.

According to the study, food delivery apps should enable users to switch calorie labels on and off; communicate the recommended energy intake per meal rather than just per day; and avoid framing the messaging or formatting of calorie labels in a way that would be judgmental, such as by using red fonts.

As a result of this Food Delivery Apps research, Dr Filippo Bianchi, who led the research, said the findings provided encouraging proof-of-concept evidence that small tweaks to delivery apps could make it easier for people to identify healthier foods and choose them.

“It will be important to test similar initiatives with real restaurants and delivery apps in the real world in order to assess the long-term impact of these interventions in the real world,” he went on to say.

The UK has seen a 55% increase in the number of adults who use food delivery apps since 2015, and 25 million adults report that they use these apps regularly.

In an annual report published last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that these developments are causing an increase in obesity in the country, in addition to its existing obesity crisis.
