Farmers Suffer as Political Groups Obstruct Payments to Farmers

CHIANG RAI – A group of farmers have showed their support for the government in finding finance for the struggling rice pledging program. Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong ensured that the government will quickly acquire loans to pay rice farmers.

Finance Minister Kittiratt that the government was urgently finding sources of loans to pay the farmers but political groups were obstructing it.

Finance Minister Kittiratt on Tuesday met with the Union of Agriculturists and Rice Farmers of Thailand who had traveled to give moral support to the government in helping the farmers in the rice support scheme. The minister told them that the government was urgently finding sources of loans to pay the farmers but political groups were obstructing it. The government’s limitations during the caretaker period were another reason of delayed payments, the minister said.

Mr Kittiratt confirmed the government would try its best to pay the farmers and it was still determined to improve the quality of life of people.

Financial institutions were ready to provide both short- and long-term loans for the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, the minister said.

The union expressed their understanding and empathy for the government while encouraging it to quickly find solutions to the payment problems.
