CHIANG RAI – Pol Capt Boonchuay Kanthawong, duty officer at Chiang Saen police station told reporters at a press confrence that Police in Chiang Saen have shot and killed a young man after he opened fire on police following a car chase early on Monday.

Pol Capt Boonchuay Kanthawong, said the incident began about 15 minutes after midnight on a road between Mae Kham Tai and Nong Pla Sadet villages in tambon Si Don Mun in Chiang Saen district.

The man drove his car through the checkpoint and when signalled to stop, he kept going forcing the police to give chase.

The young man lost control of his vehicle and skidded off the road at which time he got out and opened fire on the police with a shotgun while attempting to running away.  The police returned fire and the man was killed him instantly.

He was later identified as Tara A-ngiku, 21, of Chiang Rai’s Mae Fa Luang district.

Police found in the car six suitcases containing 600,000 methamphetamine pills.  It was believed the drugs had been smuggled from the border town of Mae Sai.
