Nobanda, 23, was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport

CHIANGRAI TIMES – The family of South African “dreadlocked drug mule”, Nolubabalo Nobanda is preparing to visit her in Thailand next month. Speaking to The New Age, the Grahamstown family revealed that arrangements are being made for some family members to travel to the Asian country.

Nobanda, 23, trial starts March 19

Nobanda, 23, was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport after getting off a Qatar Airways flight from São Paulo, Brazil, in December last year, after police discovered 1.5kg of cocaine in her dreads. The drugs were thought to be worth more than R1m.

“Although we do not have enough money to all travel to Thailand, some of us will be visiting her before the start of the trial,” said Nobanda’s mother, Honjiswa Mcepu.

The family’s visit is in preparation for the start of Nobanda’s trial, which commences on March 19 in Thailand.

Since Nobanda’s arrest last year, it has not been an easy period for the cash-strapped family.

“Assesments done by the police revealed that it was not pure cocaine, it was mixed with baking powder, and we know that she will not be getting a bigger sentence, as she has admitted to drug trafficking,” said a family member.
