Donovan Mitchell Gets His Trade to Cleveland

The NBA offseason has been quiet since the trade rumors surrounding Kevin Durant collapsed after he announced he would be staying with the Brooklyn Nets.

The second biggest NBA picks news story was the trade rumors surrounding Donovan Mitchell.

The 25-year-old shooting guard has been a part of the Utah Jazz since they drafted him in 2017 with the 13th overall pick out of Louisville.

Donovan Mitchell will be heading to pair up with Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert, and Darius Garland in Cleveland.

The NBA 2022-2023 will kick off on October 18th and will feature a completely different Cleveland Cavaliers team.

Donovan Mitchell will be paired with Darius Garland in the backcourt and will help bring more scoring to Cleveland.

Donovan Mitchell also gets to pair up with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

Evan Mobley was selected third overall by the Cavaliers in the 2021 NBA Draft and was the runner-up for the 2021-22 NBA Rookie of the Year award.

Jarrett Allen is one of the best defensive bigs in the league. Therefore, the Cavaliers will be one of the most exciting teams to watch.

Donovan Mitchell has averaged almost 24 points, four assists, and four rebounds per game for his career.

The Jazz have been exploring offers for Donovan Mitchell this whole offseason after trading Rudy Gobert on July 6th.

The Jazz wanted a significant return, including draft compensation and players for the future for Donovan Mitchell. It is clear they are entering a significant rebuild.

The Rumors Before the Trade

There were many teams interested in Donovan Mitchell before the Jazz accepted the offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The New York Knicks were one of the teams that were heavily linked.

As per reports, the Knicks offered two unprotected first-rounders and three conditional picks with Barrett early in the offseason.

Then, RJ Barrett signed a new contract with the New York Knicks, and the offer dramatically changed.

It is unknown if the Knicks offered the three unprotected first-round picks that the Jazz requested.

After Barrett was off the table, Danny Ainge, the CEO of basketball operations for the Utah Jazz, wanted Quentin Grimes to be a part of the trade.

Knicks president Leon Rose refused to include Grimes and refused to believe that the Utah Jazz had an offer with three unprotected first-rounders from any other teams.

The other offers were unknown from the Knicks, but a recent report came out on September 1st (the day the Jazz acquired Donovan Mitchell).

ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted that “at the start of trade talks in July, New York offered Utah a Donovan Mitchell package including RJ Barrett, Obi Toppin, Michell Robinson, and three unprotected first-round picks.”

The Jazz clearly said no to the offer and explored other options.

The Utah Jazz was motivated to trade Donovan Mitchell before training camp started.

The Jazz traded Rudy Gobert on July 6th for Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverly, Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler, and four first-rounders in the deal.

The other off-season move they made was trading Patrick Beverley to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Potential Destinations

The Cavaliers were not the only teams fighting for Mitchell.

The Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets were the other teams in the mix, but it is unknown if offers were on the table.

The Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat were also possible trade destinations for the star shooting guard, but it is clear now that their offer was not anything significant.

The trade of The landing place of Donovan Mitchell was a huge story because it affected the NBA picks and parlays for the upcoming season.

The Trade

On September 1st, it was announced that “ Utah is trading Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland for Lauri Markkanen, Ochair Agbaji, Collin Sexton, three unprotected first-round picks, and two pick swaps” from Adrian Wojnarowski.

This makes the Eastern Conference even more interesting as Cleveland joins the Heat, Celtics, Nets, Sixers, Bucks, Raptors, Bulls, Nets and Hawks.
