KHON KAEN – Dr Charnchai Chanvorachaikul, director of Khon Kaen provincial hospital said on Thursady that the new-born baby who survived 14 knife wounds and underground burial escaped death miraculously because all the wounds were covered with soil which helped stop the bleeding and loss of blood.

The baby boy, named Ai Din (Earth Smell) by staff at the hospital, remains in intensive care unit today and breathes with the help of a respirator. He has some fever caused by the knife wounds which have been cleaned by nurses, Thai PBS reported.

Dr Charnchai said doctors would try to remove the respirator today because the device has made it impossible for a hole punctured by a knife to be closed. For the time being, he said the baby was not allowed food nor water but if the condition has improved he would be fed with milk and food.

The doctor noted that the most important thing for the time being is to prevent the baby from getting infected and, in which case, he will have up to 100 percent chance of survival.

Ai Din was accidentally found by a cattle raiser at a rice field in Wang Yai district of Khon Kaen. He suffered 14 knife wounds with a few penetrating his lung. He was buried face down under a eucalyptus tree.

Khon Kaen provincial police commander, Pol Maj-Gen Chitcharoon Srivanich, said police have been looking for the baby’s parents and others under suspicion. He believes that the perpetrator or perpetrators are people in the neighbourhood.
