PHUKET – Danish National Peter Effers was arrested at Phuket airport with 1.6 kilograms of heroin strapped around his waist as he tried to board a flight to Copenhagen on Wednesday morning.1443392

Airport deputy director Thani Chuangcho said the drugs were discovered during the pre-boarding security inspection of carry-on bags. Staff became suspicious of the waist support belt worn by Peter Effersoe, 46.

White power found concealed in the belt was tested and found to be heroin worth approximately 3 million baht.

Tha Chatchai police special investigator Pol Lt Col Watcharin Jiratthikanwiwat said Mr Efferso admitted that he wrapped the heroin around his waist with supporting belt in order to take it to his home country.

The Phuket News reported that under questioning Mr Effersoe allegedly admitted  it was the third time had carried heroin. He had been paid around 100,000 baht for each trip, taking the drug to a  destination in Belgium.

After the press conference, Mr Efferso was taken to Tha Chatchai police to be charged.

Although Thailand carries the death penalty for drug suspects found guilty of of involvement in such a large volume of narcotics, such sentences are often commuted to long jail terms in cases where the suspect confesses to the charge.
